What is Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)?

ESWT is an innovative pain management solution. The shockwave is an audible, physical sound wave “shock”, not an electric one. This form of therapy has been around since the 1980’s and has been utilized to treat certain pathological alterations of tendons, ligaments, capsules, muscles and bones. It treats the root causes of your pain, which can be eliminated systematically with this non-invasive therapy approach. In modern pain therapy, shock wave energy is applied to the painful body regions where it can accelerate the healing process in the body by stimulating the metabolism and improving blood flow, regenerating and healing damaged tissue.

Common Conditions Treated by Shockwave Therapy

• Plantar Fasciitis, eg heel pain
• Morton’s Neuroma
• Sprained tendon/ligament from sports injury
• Elbow pain, eg tennis or golfer’s elbow
• Shoulder pain
• Achilles tendon pain
• Patellar tendonitis
• Trigger points/muscle tension or spasm
• Chronic neck and back pain

How Does ESWT Work?

First the technician localizes the pain by palpation and discusses the findings with you. A skin gel is then applied to the treatment area to allow the shock waves to be introduced into the body without any loss of energy. After these preparations, shock waves are applied as the therapy head is moved over the pain region in a circular motion.

The treatment breaks down scar tissue and/or calcification. The body responds by increasing metabolic activity around the site of pain, stimulating and accelerating the healing process by promoting the remodeling of dysfunctional collagenous tissues, such as trigger points, muscle strains, etc.

Each treatment takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on the disorder being treated. Most people can easily tolerate it. However, if it becomes too uncomfortable, adjustments on the machine can decrease the pressure you feel.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The beneficial effects of ESWT are often experienced after only 3 to 5 treatments. Some patients report immediate relief after the treatment, although it can take up to 4 weeks for pain relief to begin and between 9 to 12 weeks to see complete results. Studies demonstrate the most significant healing between 6 to 9 weeks.

Are They Any Possible Side Effects?

The extracorporeal wave has virtually no risks or side effects. In some cases patients may experience some minor discomfort, which may continue for a few days, similar to what you may experience after a full day’s work or intense exercise.

StudioEros Success Stories:

I suffered from chronic right shoulder pain from years of repetitive motion resulting in muscle spasm in rhomboid and trapezoid muscle groups. Despite taking NSAIDS and having weekly deep tissue massage, as well as steroid and injections, the pain persisted. After one treatment of ESWT, I couldn’t believe the immediate relief. I thought it was placebo effect, but it kept improving with the following three treatments.

I was recently diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma in my right foot and had pain upon walking or standing for long periods of time. I went to see an podiatrist who injected cortisone into it as well as an orthopedic surgeon who injected both amniotic fluid and to attract. After ONE treatment of ESWT with Sheina, my discomfort was 75% gone. After 3 treatments, I am 95% better, almost pain free. It really works.
